Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – Yoni Feldman scored with just over one minute remaining in the first half to give Southern Connecticut State a 1-0 win over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
The Dolphins were the first team to record a scoring chance in the first half as senior forward Angelo Reina (Frankfort, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) went in one-on-one with goalkeeper Andrew Esposito in the 33rd minute, but Esposito made a one-handed sliding save eight yards in front of the goal on Reina's chip shot to keep the game scoreless.
Just over 11 minutes later, Feldman collected a loose ball at the upper right corner of the penalty box and after dribbling sideways to find enough shooting space, fired the ball low inside the right post for his first goal of the season.
In the second half, the Dolphins recorded an 8-7 advantage in shots, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Paul Templeton had a free kick from the top of the penalty box arc in the 67th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Matthew Silva (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine) made a leaping save at the upper left corner of the goal. Le Moyne's best scoring chance came in the 82nd minute off a corner kick. Junior midfielder Jesse Carr (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) served the ball into the goal box, where freshman Michael Spadine (Owego, N.Y./Owego) headed the ball at the left post, but Owl midfielder Seth Ragaini was able to head the ball away from the goal line. Junior back Bryce Martin">Bryce Martin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Chittenango) shot the rebound back at the goal, but Esposito was able to punch it away.
Silva, named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week earlier in the day, made two second-half saves in suffering just his second loss of the season. Esposito made a pair of saves in each half to record his third straight shutout. Le Moyne finished the game with a 12-11 edge in shots, while taking six of the game's nine corner kicks.
Le Moyne (6-3-3, NE-10 5-2-2), which defeated the Owls, 2-1, in last year's Northeast-10 Conference Championship game, returns to action on Saturday against Merrimack at 1:00 p.m.
