MEN'S SOCCER UPENDED BY AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 3-2, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

Box Score

Syracuse, N.Y. – Ed Sharman scored 4:44 into the second overtime period to give American International a 3-2 win over Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at the Niland Athletic Complex.

After a scoreless first half in which American International recorded a 5-4 advantage in shots, the teams combined for four goals and 17 shots in the second half. The Yellow Jackets struck first just 3:16 into the second half. After Sharman had a shot blocked by junior back Samuel Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) and another shot kicked away from an open net by freshman back Brandon Muriel (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine), Conor Doyle headed the ball into the back of the net from just off the right corner of the goal box. The goal marked the first by the Yellow Jackets against the Dolphins since the 2008 season after being shut out each of the last three years.

The Dolphins evened the score with 27:31 remaining in the second half after being awarded a penalty kick when junior midfielder Jaime Carolissen (Cape Town, South Africa/Chesterhouse/Cayuga C.C.) was tripped just off the left corner of the goal box. Sophomore midfielder Casey Murphy (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) stepped up and buried the penalty kick into the left side of the goal for his first tally of the season.

The Yellow Jackets, who recorded multiple goals against the Dolphins for just the third time in 18 all-time meetings and for the first time in 14 meetings, regained the lead with 15:09 left after they were awarded a penalty kick of their own when Sharman was knocked to the ground by junior goalkeeper Matthew Silva (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine) as the two jumped for a crossing pass. Sharman then converted the kick into the right side of the net.

Le Moyne knotted the score at two apiece with eight minutes and 21 seconds to go. Junior midfielder Perry Clark (Severn, Md./Old Mill) served a pass from near the right sideline into the penalty box. After the ball skipped towards the goal off an AIC defender's head, Murphy volleyed the ball out of the air and into the back of the net from 12 yards out.

In the first overtime period, the Dolphins forced AIC goalkeeper Jason Ryan to make two saves, while Silva turned away the only shot he faced.

After having his initial shot blocked by Clark at the 4:40 mark of the second overtime period, Sharman blasted the rebound into the goal from 12 yards out to give the Yellow Jackets the win.

Silva finished the game with seven saves in suffering the loss between the pipes. Ryan recorded four saves to pick up his first victory of the year. The Yellow Jackets took twice as many shots as the Dolphins, 22-11, while holding a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Le Moyne (1-3, 0-1 NE-10), which lost to American International for the first time since a 3-2 setback in 1999 (11-0-2 between losses, 14-2-2 overall), returns to action on Saturday at Saint Anselm at 12:00 p.m.
