Syracuse, N.Y. – Playing in his final collegiate home game, senior goalkeeper Matthew Silva (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine) registered three saves to set the program's career shutout record (26) as the Le Moyne College men's soccer team defeated Stonehill College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field to clinch the fifth seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. The Dolphins open Northeast-10 Conference Championship play on Tuesday with a quarterfinal match-up at fourth-seeded Adelphi University at 7:00 p.m.
The shutout, the 26th of Silva's 69-game career, moves him out of a tie with Steve White '09 (83 career games) for the top spot on the all-time shutout chart. Silva's eight shutouts this season are tied for the third-most on the program's single-season chart and are tied for the most in the Northeast-10 this season. The win is the 36th of Silva's career, which ties him with Mike Williams for the second-most in the program's history behind White's 52 career victories.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring just over 25 minutes into the match. Senior forward Michael Spadine (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) carried the ball into the middle of the field before sending a pass into the penalty box. Junior back/midfielder Cal Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) ran onto the ball, cut to his left and fired a shot into the top left corner of the net at the 25:01 mark from 12 yards out.
Le Moyne doubled its lead less than 10 minutes later. Midfielder Zachary MacNabb (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/UNC Pembroke) sent a pass from the middle of the field into the top left corner of the penalty box to Spadine, who blasted a shot into the lower right corner of the goal with 10:13 left in the half for his fifth tally in eight games.
The Dolphins completed the scoring in the game following a Stonehill foul outside the right side of the penalty box in the final minute of the first half. Sophomore back/midfielder Mark Gentile (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne) put the free kick at the top of the goal box, where junior back Keleenna Onyeaka (Birmingham, England/Solihull Sixth Form College/Felician) headed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for his fifth marker of the campaign.
Le Moyne registered a 10-5 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 edge in the first half. Stonehill recorded six of the game's eight corner kicks, including all five in the second half. Adam Colella took the loss between the pipes for the Skyhawks after making two saves (against three goals) in 78:54.
Le Moyne (11-6, 8-5 NE-10), which won three of its last four conference games, honored the five members of its senior class prior to the contest. In addition to Silva and Spadine, midfielder Perry Clark (Severn, Md./Old Mill) and back Samuel Carroll">Samuel Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) and student assistant Michael Martin (Easthampton, Mass./Easthampton/Piedmont College) were honored for their contributions to the program.
