Sean Beney (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and
Jeanette Cudney (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) each earned All-Region honors to lead the Le Moyne College men's and women's cross country teams at the 2016 NCAA East Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds. The men's team finished in ninth place, while the women placed 12th.
For the men, American International, which won its third consecutive NE-10 championship two weeks ago, recorded its third straight regional title with 49 points after having two of the top three finishers and four of the top 12. The Yellow Jackets were led by Leakey Kipkosgei, who added to his conference title by claiming the individual title with a first-place time of 31:05.3. Joining the Yellow Jackets at the national championship in two weeks will be Stonehill College, which placed second with 80 points, and Bentley University, which placed third with 98 points. Le Moyne's ninth-place finish is a six-spot improvement from last year and its best over the last 12 seasons.
On the women's side, Stonehill College, which captured its eighth straight Northeast-10 Conference Championship two weeks ago, recorded its 14th regional championship with 48 points for the second straight year, with all five scorers finishing in the top 14. Two-time Northeast-10 champion Nicole Borofski repeated as regional champion by placing first by 26.3 seconds in 20:57.5, 15 seconds faster than last year. Assumption College and Roberts Wesleyan College earned berths to the NCAA Championships by placing second and third, respectively, with 90 and 113 points. Le Moyne's 12th-place finish is one spot higher than last season.
Beney earned his first career all-region honors, and the program's first since 2009, by placing 22nd after covering the 10-kilometer course in 32:20.2. His placement was 19 spots higher than last year and the highest finish by a Dolphin since 2009, while his time was 45.2 seconds faster than one year ago and 2:05 faster than as a freshman. Freshman
Nick Taylor (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) registered a time of 33:41.6 to place 55th, while classmate
Chris Davitt (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) was three spots behind in 33:52.4. Sophomore
Griffin Klein (Fair Haven, N.Y./Red Creek) turned in a 68th-place finish, up 26 spots from last year, with a time of 34:14.5, 60.2 seconds faster than a year ago. Freshman
Dom Battaglia (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) rounded out the team's top five scorers by placing 110th with a time of 35:59.7.
Cudney collected her second straight all-region honors with a 24th-place finish, up one spot from last year, after navigating the six-kilometer course in a season-best 22:53.4, the third-best time of her career over the distance. Sophomore
Rachael Miller (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) crossed the finish line 46th among 191 competitors with a career-best time of 23:29.8. She improved her finish by 48 places from last year and was 1:16.5 faster. Freshman
Siara Clos (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga) registered a career-best time of 24:20.3 to place 84th, while classmate
Jill Stagnitta (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) was five spots back in a career-best 24:29.4. Senior
Elena Doctor (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca East) completed her career with the fastest time of her career, 24:46.0, 22.5 seconds faster than last year, to place 100th, 12 spots better than last year.
