West Chester, Pa. – Senior
John Clare (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) earned medalist honors to lead the Le Moyne College men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational hosted by West Chester University on Sunday and Monday at the par-71, 6644-yard Penn Oaks Golf Club.
Davis & Elkins College captured the team competition with a two-day score of 605 off rounds of 294 and 311. The Dolphins placed second with a 614 following a 305 in the first round (third-best score of the day) and a 309 in the second round (third-best score of the day). The host Rams placed third with a 616 off rounds of 299 and 317, while Franklin Pierce University was one shot back after turning in scores of 311 and 306. Mercyhurst University rounded out the top five with a 620 after rounds of 322 and 298, the best score of the second round.
Clare recorded his second first-place finish of the year and the sixth of his seven-semester career as a Dolphin by registering a 36-hole score of 147. He posted a 73 in the first round to land in a tie for fourth place and then turned in a 74 in the second round, which tied for the best round of the day, to climb to the top of the leaderboard.
Freshman
Jonathan Petrin (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) finished in second place with a 150. He was in third place after posting a one-over 72 in the first round and maintained a hold on a top-four placement by carding a 78 on Monday. Junior
Joe Petrin (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) carded a 154 to finish in a tie for 11th place after registering a 78 in the first round and a 76 on the second day. Junior
Daniel Thomas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and freshman
Nicholas Barney (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) tied for 42nd place with a 164. Thomas posted rounds of 83 and 81, while Barney recorded back-to-back scores of 72.
The Dolphins, who have placed in the top-two in four of their six Division II events, host the annual Mike Bello Invitational on Friday at Timber Banks Golf Club in Baldwinsville. The 36-hole event will feature 13 teams with the morning 18 holes starting at 8:00 a.m. and the afternoon 18 beginning at approximately 1:00 p.m.
