Daniels, W. Va. – Sophomore
Nicholas Barney (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) tied for 24th to lead the Le Moyne College men's golf team to a tie for 12th place at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional held Monday through Wednesday at the par-72, 7114-yard Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs.
The top three teams from the Regional advanced to the 20-team NCAA Championship on May 21-25 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals, Fighting Joe Course in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, while the top two individuals not with a team advancing to the Championship also advance.
The Dolphins opened the regional with a 292 to land in fifth place, two shots off the lead. Le Moyne followed with a 302 on Tuesday to move up into fourth place, three shots off the lead. The Dolphins closed out the regional with a 315 in the third round to drop into the tie for 12th place with a three-day score of 909.
Roberts Wesleyan College won the team competition with a 25-over par 889, 10 shots better than last year's champion at the same course. The Redhawks opened the tournament with a 293 to land in sixth place, fired a 307 on Tuesday to dip into a tie for sixth place and then captured the title by one shot with a regional-best 289 on Wednesday. Franklin Pierce placed second with a 26-over par 890. The Ravens recorded a 291 on Monday to place in a three-way tie for second, registered a 300 in the second round to take over first place and then into second place with a 299 on the final day. The University of Charleston finished in third place for the second straight year and the fourth time in the last five years with a 54-hole score of 892. The Golden Eagles carded a 294 in the first round to land in seventh place, a 301 on Tuesday to move into fifth place and then recorded a 297 to vault into third place and secure the final berth in the national championships. Concordia's Minwoo Park earned medalist honors with a nine-under par 207 off rounds of 70, 69 and 69. Wilmington's Ryan Rucinski placed second with a three-under par 213 after rounds of 69, 73 and 71 to join Park in advancing to the Championship as individuals.
Barney, who improved 40 spots from his tie for 64th place in his NCAA debut last year, recorded four birdies, an eagle and a team-high 37 pars (two shy of the regional lead) on his way to a career-best 224. He registered a one-over 73 in the first round to land in a 10-way tie for 17th place. After posting a 77 in the second round to dip into a nine-way tie for 36th place, he tallied a 74 in the third round to move up 12 places in the final standings.
Senior
Joe Petrin (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), who placed in a six-way tie for 55th at the 2015 regional, a 10-way tie for 49th place in 2016 and a four-way tie for 15th last year, totaled a team-best seven birdies and 32 pars en route to a three-day score of 227 and a three-way tie for 41st place. He started the regional off by carding five birdies to finish the first round with a season-best two-under par 70, which landed him in a five-way tie for third place. He followed with a 74 in the second round to dip into a tie for fifth place, the same spot he was last year after the second round. He posted an 83 on the final day to finish in the three-way tie for 41st place.
Senior
Jake Eno (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional), who made his NCAA debut, finished in a three-way tie for 51st place with a career-best 230, which included three birdies and an eagle. He opened the week with a two-over par 74 to land in a 12-way tie for 27th place. He slipped into a four-way tie for 36th place with a 77 in the second round. He closed out his career with a 79 on Wednesday to finish in 51st place.
Sophomore
Jonathan Petrin (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and senior
Daniel Thomas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), were part of a six-way tie for 71st place. Petrin, who tied for 40th place with a 231 in his NCAA debut last year, tallied four birdies and 33 pars en route to a 234. On Monday, he carded a 75 to land in a 12-way tie for 39th place. He jumped into an eight-way tie for 19th place with a 74 in the second round for the second straight year. He slid in the standings following an 85 on the final day.
Thomas, who participated in the regional for the third straight year, carded a team high-tying seven birdies, an eagle and 25 pars en route to finishing with the 234, his best mark in his three regionals. He turned in a 75 in the first round to land in the 12-way tie for 39th place. He posted an 80 in the second round for the second straight year to fall to a seven-way tie for 59th place. He concluded his career with 79 to slide to his final placement.
