Grand Lake, Colo. – Le Moyne College senior defender
Kelly Gaffney (Florham Park, N.J./ Mount Saint Dominic Academy) and sophomore goalkeeper
Hannah George (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) have been named the best players at their position by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), as announced by the association on Tuesday afternoon.
Gaffney was selected as the IWLCA Defender of the Year and George was tabbed as the IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year.
The duo joins three teammates in earning IWLCA All-America honors. Le Moyne's five all-Americans and three first team selections are both tied for the most in Division II. Adelphi University and Florida Institute of Technology each had five all-Americans, while national finalist Florida Southern also had three first team selections. Gaffney and George were joined on the first team by junior attacker
Bryanna Fazio (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown). Sophomore defender
Olivia McEntee (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) was selected to the second team and sophomore midfielder
Nicole Delany (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) earned a spot on the third team. The five all-Americans are tied with the 2015 team for the most in the program's history, while the three first team selections are tied with the 2011 team for the most in a single season.
Gaffney, an all-American for the first time in her career, is the first Dolphin in the program's history to be named the IWLCA Defender of the Year. Gaffney anchored a defense that allowed only 6.61 goals per game, the third-best mark in Division II and the best among the eight teams to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals. The first Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year in the program's history, she led the Dolphins defensively with career highs of 55 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers, which tied for the second-most in the NE10. Her 55 ground balls are tied for ninth in the program's history and are tied for the second-most over the last 20 years, while her caused turnovers are the third-most in a single season, trailing only former teammate
Vicki Graveline's final two seasons. An NE10 All-Conference First Team selection and IWLCA All-Region honoree for the second straight year, she caused multiple turnovers in 11 games, including six games with at least three caused turnovers. Named to the Northeast-10 All-Championship and NCAA All-Championship teams, she had multiple ground balls in 17 games, including six games with at least four ground balls.
George, who was selected to the IWLCA All-America Second Team last year, joins Gaffney in making history by being first Dolphin selected as the IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year. The Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and NE10 First Team selection for the second straight season, George set a Division II record with 22 victories between the pipes. She led Division II in save percentage with a mark of .563 and recorded the second-best goals against average at 6.54. She finished the season with 192 saves, the seventh-most in the country. The Northeast-10 Conference Championships Most Valuable Player and a member of the Northeast-10 All-Championship and NCAA All-Championship teams, she ranks second on the program's single-season charts in goals against average (behind only last year's mark), fourth in saves (most since 2009 and second-most since 1998) and sixth in save percentage (best since 2001).
Fazio, a two-time all-region selection, earns her first career all-America accolade. The NCAA Championships Most Outstanding Player, she led the Dolphins offensively with a career-high 105 points on a career-best 78 goals and a career-high 27 assists, while also collecting a program-record 154 draw controls. She led the NE10 and was fourth in Division II in draw controls. In addition to her program-record draw control total, she ranks second on the program's single-season chart in goals, third in goals per game (3.39) and fourth in points. She posted at least five points in 12 of 23 games, including at least six points in all three games of the NCAA Championships, while posting at least a hat trick in 14 games. She had 15 games with at least five draw controls, including nine games with at least eight.
McEntee collects all-America honors for the first time in her career. An IWLCA East Region First Team and Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference First Team selection, she joined Gaffney and George in keying the nation's third-best scoring defense. A starter in all 23 games, she finished the season with career-highs of 38 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers, the second-most on the team and the seventh-most in a season in the program's history. She also contributed four assists in transition. She was one of just 10 players in the NE10 with at least 35 ground balls and at least 25 caused turnovers. She registered multiple ground balls in 12 games and caused multiple turnovers in eight games.
Delany also earns her first career all-America recognition. A Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference First Team and IWLCA East Region Second Team selection, she recorded a career-high 83 points on career-bests of 77 goals and six assists, while adding 41 draw controls, 36 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers as a starter in all 23 games. She ranked second on the team in goals and third in points. Her goal total was the third-best in the NE10 and tied for eighth nationally, while she was 10th in the conference in points.
