Orlando, F.L.- The Le Moyne College men's golf team concluded play today at the McDonough Cup, hosted by Rollins College. The Dolphins finished 12th in the three-round, two-day tournament, stacked with nationally ranked teams.
The tournament was held at Rio Pinar Country Club, which was played as a par-72 from 7001 yards. #19 Nova Southeastern won the team competition after shooting a combined 20-under par 844 off of rounds of 278, 283 and 283. The Dolphins finished 12th, six shots behind Florida Tech. After a first round score of 310 and a second round score of 295, Dolphins finished the last round with a 302, giving them a combined score of 907. The individual competition was won by Nova Southeastern's Javier Calles, who shot a combined score of eight-under par 208 off of rounds of 65, 72 and 71, including a chip in for birdie on the final hole to claim medalist honors by one shot.
The Dolphins were led by sophomore Tyler Birdd (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois), who jumped 25 spots on the final day into a tie for 25th after a third round score of a career best-tying 68. His four-under round was highlighted by six birdies. He shot a 76 and 75 in the first two rounds on Monday, giving him a total combined score of 219. Birdd finished with a total of 10 birdies in the three rounds, tied for 15th-most in the entire tournament.
Graduate student Ryan Johnson (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) finished in a tie for 55th after rounds of 77, 74, and 78, combining for a total score of 229. Over the three rounds, Johnson tallied a total of nine birdies, tied for 21st-most in the tournament.
Sophomore
Spencer Baum (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) finished in a tie for 58th with a combined score of 230 off of rounds of 81,70 and 79. He played the second round in two under par, after four birdies and an eagle, one of just 13 at the event.
After rounds of 78, 80 and 77, combining for a total score of 235, junior Nicholas Bove (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) finished in a tie for 68th.
Freshman
Johnny Gruninger (Syracuse, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) also finished in the tie for 68th after rounds of 79,76 and 80, combining for a total of 235.
Junior Maxwell Dec (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) played an individual and finished in 70th, after a total score of 236 off of two rounds of 78 and an 80. Junior
Luke Barney (Apalchin, N.Y./Vestal) also played as an individual and finished in 71st, one shot back of Dec. He shot a combined score of 237 off of rounds of 80, 77 and 80.
