BASEBALL BLASTS SEVEN HOME RUNS DURING TWO VICTORIES OVER D'YOUVILLE ON TUESDAY

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team won both games of their non-conference doubleheader against the D'Youville University Saints on Tuesday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.

The Dolphins launched six homeruns during the first seven-inning contest of the afternoon on their way to a 16-10 victory, then the 'Phins claimed a 3-2 victory in game two to improve their record to 13-12.

Graduate right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and senior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) both recorded their first career multi-homerun game during the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Smith smashed three two-run homeruns, crossed the plate four times, and contributed a career-high six RBIs during the victory, while Nevins provided two homeruns to the Dolphins' cause and tied his career-high with five RBIs in game one.

Smith is just the fifth Le Moyne baseball player in the last 21 seasons to hit three home runs in a single game, and the first to do it since Andrew Taft launched three home runs at Jefferson in March of 2019.

Senior first baseman Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) hit his fifth homerun of the season, a two-run shot, during game two, and graduate third baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free-Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) provided the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the 6th to lift the 'Phins to a 3-2 victory.

Senior right-hander Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) got the final three outs during game two to earn the save and secure the win for the 'Phins.

"After falling behind early in game one, our guys put together some great at-bats and were able to secure the win. Then we needed to keep them at bay with a low-scoring affair in game two. It was nice to see we were able to pull out the wins in two drastically different games. The hitters picked us up when needed in game one and the pitchers did the same in game two," said Le Moyne Head Coach Scott Cassidy '98 after the two Dolphin victories.

The Saints took a 3-0 lead during the top of the 2nd inning in game one via a leadoff double, a walk, and a three-run homerun from Dillon Crook.

D'Youville extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the 3rd following a two-run homerun from Alex Boucher and a solo homerun from John Rogowski Jr.

The 'Phins took their frustration out on the baseball during the bottom of the 3rd.

Junior center fielder Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) led off the inning with a solo homerun over the center field fence, then Nevins hit a one-out solo homerun over the right field fence.

Syta reached base after hitting a ground ball to the right side of the infield, then Smith hit a two-out, two-run homerun to right center field to trim the deficit to 6-4.

The 'Phins loaded the bases later in the 3rd, but a fly ball to center field ended the inning.

Chris Stefan got a run back for the Saint in the top of the 4th with a solo homerun.

Nevins was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 4th, then Syta and Smith both drew walks to load the bases.

Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) drew an RBI walk to cut the Saints' lead to 7-5.

A wild pitch allowed Syta to score, which made it 7-6, then Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) hit a slow ground ball to the shortstop which drove in Smith from third base and tied the game at 7-7.

D'Youville scratched across a run during the top of the 5th to regain the lead.

Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 5th, then Brush walked to move Patchett into scoring position.

Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) drew a walk to load the bases with zero outs.

Nevins drove a sacrifice fly ball into deep center field which allowed Patchett to tag up and score, tying the game at 8-8. The ball was hit deep enough that Brush was able to tag up as well and take third base.

Syta executed just as well during the next Le Moyne at-bat. Syta lifted a fly ball of his own into deep center field that brought Brush in to score and gave the 'Phins a 9-8 lead.

With two outs and Carroll on first base, Smith lifted another 2-run homerun over the right field fence to extend Le Moyne's lead to 11-8.

D'Youville responded with two runs during the top of the 6th to make it a one-run game.

Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) led off the bottom of the 6th inning with a walk, then Patchett dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Fureno into scoring position.

Carroll drew a walk to put runners on first and second, then Nevins turned on a pitch and blasted his second homerun of the game, a three-run shot, over the right field fence to make it 14-10 in favor of the Dolphins.

Syta was hit by a pitch during the next at-bat, then Smith hit his third two-run homerun, this one down the right field line, to extend Le Moyne's lead to 16-10.

Junior right-hander Jed Boyle (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) struck out the side during the top of the 7th inning to end the game and secure the 16-10 victory for the Dolphins.

The Saint loaded the bases with zero outs during the top of the 1st in game number two, but freshman right-hander Steven Freer (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) got a double play and a fly ball to end the inning without allowing a run.

Freer allowed just two hits while striking out three batters in 3.0 innings of work. John Geer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and Jacob Crystal (Cicero, N.Y.) both pitched 1.1 innings in relief.

The 'Phins took a 2-0 lead during the second half of Tuesday's doubleheader in the bottom of the 3rd when a Nick Nevins single up the middle was immediately followed by a Ty Syta two-run shot over the right field fence. Syta has hit all five of his homeruns this season during Le Moyne's last seven games.

The Saints got a run back in the top of the 4th following a hit-by-pitch, a double into right-center field, and an RBI ground ball to the right side of the infield.

D'Youville tied the game at 2-2 during the top of the 5th via a walk, a single into center field, a walk to load the bases, and a bases-loaded walk.

The Saints loaded the bases again with two outs in the top of the 6th, but Patchett came in and got the final out of the inning while keeping the game tied at 2-2.

Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) hit a single back to the pitcher to lead off the bottom of the 6th, then he advanced to second base on a balk.

Hansen laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Boule over to third base with one out.

Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, I.L./Adlai E. Stevenson) drew a walk, then Miller ripped a single into center field to drive in Boule and give the 'Phins a 3-2 advantage.

D'Youville put runners on first and second with zero outs in the top of the 7th, and Coach Cassidy brought in Maser from the bullpen.

During his first batter faced Maser got a ground ball to the right side which resulted in a 4-6-3 double play. After walking a batter, with two outs and runners on first and third base, hanging onto a 3-2 lead, Maser got a fly ball to end the game, earn the save, and complete the victory for the 'Phins.

The Le Moyne College baseball team will stay in Syracuse for a four-game weekend series against Northeast-10 Conference opponent University of New Haven starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 against the Chargers at Dick Rockwell Field.
