Box Score 3 Flushing, N.Y. – Fifth-year
Tom Jarry (Paris, France/CNED Toulouse/Emmanuel) won the singles championship to lead the Le Moyne College men's tennis team at the ITA East Regional Friday through Sunday at the USTA National Tennis Center. The Dolphins recorded 18 wins and just five losses between singles and doubles competition.
Head coach
Jeff Lonczak '03 had this to say about Jarry's performance.. "He was the sixth seed in the draw. He made his way through the quarterfinals in a workmanlike fashion. In the quarterfinals, he faced a graduate transfer (Thomas Guy) who played at Florida Atlantic for four years and now is at SNHU. In a marathon match, he fought off set points in the first set to ultimately win 7-5, 6-4. In the semifinals, he played the eighth seed from Queens (Kareem Rashad), who up to this point had lost nine games in four matches on his way to the semifinals. He (Rashad) was playing his best but once again Tom was able to figure out how to beat him in the 10-point tiebreak. He was two points away from being out of the tournament but he refused to lose. In the finals, after playing about 15 hours of tennis in three days (six singles matches and five doubles) his mind and body lost connection in the second set and his focus had disappeared. Thankfully, he won the first so there was a third set breaker to be played. Somehow, he found the will to grind the Norwegian freshman lefty from SNHU into the ground, literally. It was an amazing run from an amazing player and person."
"In year number seven and our sixth chance to compete at regionals, our dreams finally came to fruition. In the early days we were completely overlooked and disregarded. Now, we're the standard. We expect to win. It's truly an honor to coach these men and women."
Jarry, who was the sixth seed in the championship, opened play with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Juan Estevez Hernandez of the University of the District of Columbia in the first round. He then beat Queens College's Francisco Gonzalez in the second round, 6-2, 6-1. In the third round, he was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over St. Thomas Aquinas College's Ludovic Truffelli. In the quarterfinals, he tallied a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Southern New Hampshire University's Thomas Guy. On Sunday morning, he split the first two sets, 7-6 and 5-7, against eighth-seeded Kareem Rashad before winning the tiebreaker, 11-9. He captured the championship by splitting the first two sets, 7-5 and 2-6, against Southern New Hampshire's Jonathan Berling, the 10th seed, before claiming the tiebreaker, 10-5. With the championship, Jarry advances to the ITA National Championship in four weeks in Rome, Georgia.
Lonczak added, "In the men's doubles draw
Tom Jarry and
Ethan Miller got the second seed. The level of each team increased with each round of the tournament. They beat teams from Stonehill, Chestnut Hill, St. Thomas Aquinas and Queens before falling in the finals to Southern New Hampshire. They took a great team to the absolute limit. I think they truly deserve consideration for an at-large bid to the ITA Cup in Rome in a few weeks."
In doubles action with junior
Ethan Miller (Swindon, England/Cirencetser Kingshill School), Jarry advanced to the championship match. The duo, the second seed, opened play with an 8-2 victory over Stonehill College's Louis Coppi and Guillaume Duhil de Bénazé in the first round. They then beat Chestnut Hill College's Joao Sousa and Joseph Gregory Kvint, 8-5. In the quarterfinals, Jarry and Miller were 8-2 victors over St. Thomas Aquinas College's Eduard Simo and Maximillian Kendler. They then defeated Queens' Moritz Borges and Lucas Demuth, 8-5, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Jarry and Miller were edged by Southern New Hampshire's Berling and Fernando Torres, 9-8, after falling in the tiebreaker, 7-5.
Le Moyne's other doubles team of
Jared Howard (Malmesbury, South Africa/Homeschooled/ASA College) and
James Howard ((Malmesbury, South Africa/Homeschooled/ASA College), who were seeded fifth, advanced to the quarterfinals. In the first round, they defeated Queens' Omar El Shehawey and Philipp Uhde, 8-4. They then topped Franklin Pierce University's Nkrumah Patrick and Alejandro Ortiz, 8-4. They fell in the quarterfinals to SNHU's Torres and Berling, 8-5.
In singles action, junior

He opened with a 6-4, 6-2 win over STAC's Tony Khamassi and then registered the same score in the second round to defeat USciences' Jakob Kalteis. He fell to SNHU's Guy in the third round in a tiebreaker, 10-3, after they each won a set, 6-3.
Jared Howard, who entered the regional as the top seed, was upset in the second round. He posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the first round over Anton Anderson from Post University. He was then edged in a tiebreaker, 11-9, by Queens' Borges after dropping the first set, 7-5, and winning the second set, 6-3.
