WOMEN'S SOCCER RETURNS TO TED GRANT FIELD FOR TUESDAY NE10 CLASH AGAINST FRANKLIN PIERCE

9/26/2022 4:52:00 PM

Syracuse, N.Y. – Coming off a 0-0 tie on the road against NE10 opponent Saint Michael's College on Saturday, the Le Moyne College women's soccer team returns home to take on the Franklin Pierce University Ravens on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. on Ted Grant Field.

Prior to the tie against the Purple Knights, the Dolphins nearly earned a point on the road against The College of Saint Rose after coming back from a 1-0 deficit, but the Golden Knights scored a go-ahead goal with two seconds left in the game to claim a 2-1 conference victory.

Five different Le Moyne players have hit the back of the net this season, including defender Hildur Unnarsdóttir (Kópavogur, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) who leads the team with three goals scored.

Unnarsdóttir is an important member of the Le Moyne defensive unit, and one of the team's best set piece takers. The sophomore defender has scored twice on a penalty kick this season, and once on a spectacular free kick from distance. She frequently plays dangerous balls into the opponent's penalty area on long free kicks, as well as on corner kicks from either flag.

First-year players Lindsey LeBlanc (Westminster, Mass./St. Bernard's), Avery Maxam (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton), and Hermine Hognerud (Oslo, Norway/Eikeli Videregående Skole), along with redshirt sophomore center midfielder Magda Aspholm (Östersund, Sweden/Jämtlands Gymnasium Wargentin) have each scored one goal this season for the Dolphins.

Le Moyne goalkeeper Allison Moreau (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley) has tallied 37 saves and three clean sheets through eight games.

Unnarsdóttir, LeBlanc, Maxam, senior attacking midfielder Lainey Foti (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWItt) and freshman midfielder Payton Khadra (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) have each provided one assist for the Dolphins this year.

The Ravens of FPU have recorded three straight shutout NE10 victories at home after losing the opening game of their conference schedule at Saint Rose, who was ranked #1 at the time.

Franklin Pierce took down Saint Anselm 2-0, then bested #8 Southern New Hampshire University 1-0 on Wednesday, and claimed a 1-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.

Although the Ravens were not ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Women's Top 25 Poll that was released on September 20, they did receive votes. Considering that their most recent wins over #8 SNHU, who was ranked #1 in the East Region Poll, and SCSU, who was ranked #7 in the East Region Poll came on the 21st and 24th of the month, respectively, it seems safe to assume that the Ravens, who were ranked #4 in the most recent East Region Poll, will move into the top 25 rankings in the September 27 Poll.

So by the time the two sides kick off on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., the Dolphins may be playing against a ranked opponent, which would be the third time that they've taken on a team in the top 25, and the second time they've hosted a ranked opponent on Ted Grant Field so far this season.

The Ravens have consistently used two goalkeepers in each game this season, playing one for the first half and subbing the other in for the second half. FPU sophomore goalkeeper Emilie Fox and Gabby Calidonio have each appeared in all eight games this season, and they have both been featured in the starting lineup four times.

The pair has recorded a combined five shutouts this season as the Ravens have started the campaign with a 6-1-1 record.

Sophomore midfielder Jasmine Perez-Acosta has scored in all three games during the team's three-game win streak.  She provided the Ravens with an insurance goal against Saint Anselm, then put away the crucial go-ahead goals in both 1-0 wins over SNHU and SCSU.

Perez-Acosta and freshman forward Mollie Cahalane lead FPU with four goals each so far this season. Cahalane scored the opening goal of the team's 2-0 win against Saint Anselm, and prior to that she scored two goals during her collegiate debut, a 3-0 win against Staten Island.

Junior midfielder Gianna Derose has started all eight games this season for the Ravens and leads the team in assists with three, while sophomore forward Delaney Farinha and junior midfielder Anna Crapanzano have both tallied two goals.

The Ravens have consistently gotten the better of the Dolphins in recent seasons, winning each of the last five matchups between the two sides. The last Le Moyne victory against FPU came in October of 2015 when the Dolphins bested the Ravens 3-1 at home.

Kickoff for Tuesday's match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Admission to the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex and Ted Grant Field is free.
