Mansfield, Mass. – The Le Moyne College women's basketball team claimed three of the four major Northeast-10 All-Conference Awards and had four different players earn all-league recognition.
Head coach
Mary Grimes was named NE10 Coach of the Year, senior guard
Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, and redshirt-freshman guard
Sydney Lusher (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) was voted Rookie of the Year.
Baker was also named to the NE10 All-Conference First Team, while redshirt-sophomore forward
Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) earned Third Team All-Conference recognition.
Lusher and freshman guard
Kaia Goode (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) were both named to the conference's All-Rookie Team.
The last Le Moyne women's basketball player to take home the NE10 Rookie of the Year Award was McKayla Roberts, who was named ROY in 2016-17 before going on to become Le Moyne's all-time leading scorer.
Vandell Andrade was the last Dolphin to be named Defensive Player of the Year when she earned the award as a senior in 2015-16. Vandrade averaged 4.1 defensive rebounds and 2.2 steals per game in her Le Moyne career.
2018-19 was the last time the conference's Coach of the Year Award went to Le Moyne. Gina Castelli was named Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Dolphins to a 21-5 regular season record.
Grimes led the 2022-23 Le Moyne squad to a 21-5 regular season record, which along with the 2018-19 team's mark is tied for the second best regular season record in program history.
In just her second season as the program's leader, Grimes and the Dolphins have claimed two NE10 regular season championship trophies and will earn their second berth to the NCAA Championships in as many years once the bracket is revealed on Sunday.
"I am truly humbled to be Coach of the Year, but it would not be possible without my assistant coaches' dedication, the players' commitment and the support we receive from our administration. I feel really blessed to work with some amazing young women who strive for excellence every day on the court and in the classroom. I am still in awe of the work our team puts in day in and day out in practice and the resiliency they have in games, because the NE10 is a tough conference with great coaches and players. This is truly an honor to be acknowledged," said Grimes.
In 2022-23, Le Moyne went 16-4 against NE10 competition in the regular season with a 11-2 record at home and a 10-3 road resume. The Dolphins won 16 of their final 17 regular season games, including an 11-game conference winning streak that tied a program record. 2022-23 was the first season in program history during which the Dolphins won 10 road games, and their eight-game road winning streak is also a program record. Le Moyne led the league in scoring during the regular season while also holding their opponents to under 57.0 points per game, which was the 15
th best opponent points average in the country.
Baker tallied a league-best 14 double-doubles during the regular season and currently holds averages of 12.8 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.0 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.
The 5'8" senior leads the NE10 in defensive rebounding with 7.3 per game and anchored the back line of Le Moyne's zone along with Roberts.
Baker recorded a double-double in six of Le Moyne's first seven games of the season and was the NE10's leading rebounder for almost the entire campaign.
Lytoya tallied 11 points and a career-high 18 rebounds during Le Moyne's 53-38 home win over Bentley on January 21, then poured in 30 points on 14 made field goals to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in a 12-point win over Adelphi.
During Le Moyne's dramatic 58-57 home win over nationally ranked Assumption University on February 7, Baker provided 21 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in 37 minutes of action.
Baker's 15 double-doubles so far this season is the most by any Le Moyne player in the last 30+ years. The senior guard from Rochester, one of Le Moyne's leaders on the team, was one of the most dominant players in the conference this season at both ends of the floor. A dynamic athlete with a great feel for the game, Baker always played within the offense and fearlessly attacked the basket all season long.
Baker and Roberts have been an awesome rebounding duo near the hoop for the 'Phins, and during many games this season Baker would become an impactful distributor to the other capable offensive players in Le Moyne's rotation.
Lusher, a 5'11" rookie point guard from Oneida, New York, had a memorable debut season in the Green and Gold. She currently ranks fourth in the NE10 in assists (3.6 per game), fourth in assist to turnover ratio (1.8), seventh in steals (1.8 per game), she is tied for 11
th in blocks (0.7 per game), she is 21
st in scoring (11.0 per game), and fourth in minutes played (35.5 per game).
Lusher tallied 20 points in her Le Moyne debut, and has scored in double figures during 17 different games so far this season. She recorded at least four assists in 15 different contests in 2022-23 and provided a season-best eight assists against AIC on February 11.
Lusher tallied 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block in 35 minutes played during a win at Franklin Pierce on November 30. Sydney provided a season-high 21 points on 7-14 shooting from the field, including 5-11 from beyond the arc during a win at New Haven on December 31, then contributed 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals during a big win over SNHU on January 14 that kicked off the team's 11-game winning streak. Lusher has been a tremendous floor general for the 'Phins on offense while also being capable of defending on both the perimeter and interior.
Lusher and Goode, who have both started every game of their rookie campaigns, were the only two rookies in the conference this season to average over 10.0 points per game while playing in at least 60% of their team's games.
Goode leads the NE10 in steals with 2.3 per game while also averaging 10.3 points, 3.0 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 32.4 minutes played. Kaia scored in double figures during each of her first six collegiate games, and in total she has scored in double figures 16 times this season. Goode tallied a season-high seven steals to go along with 13 points, four assists and three rebounds at Adelphi on November 22.
Goode provided 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block in 36 minutes played during the win over SNHU, then followed that up with 13 points, three assists, four steals and two rebounds during a 74-63 win at Southern Connecticut State.
During a February 4 home win over Franklin Pierce, Goode recorded a season-high 20 points, a season-high six rebounds, a season-high six steals and four assists in a double-digit Le Moyne win. Goode is a big part of Le Moyne's stingy defense, and she has shouldered much of the ball handling duties in her rookie season alongside Lusher.
Goode's quickness and creativity with the ball has helped the Dolphins consistently create good looks in their half-court offense. She was also dynamic in transition and often started Le Moyne's offense with great defense.
Roberts, who has started all 27 of Le Moyne's games so far in 2022-23, is currently second on the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game, and is tied for fifth in the NE10 with 7.8 rebounds per game. She is tied with Lusher for 11
th in the NE10 with 0.7 blocks per game while also contributing 0.8 steals in 29.9 minutes played per game.
Roberts is third in the NE10 in free-throw percentage, shooting 88.0% on 3.7 attempts per game. Roberts has been a fearless interior force for the 'Phins while also being capable of stepping out to the perimeter and knocking down a jump shot. Roberts' versatility has provided even more space for Le Moyne's free-flowing spread offense. The 6'1" sophomore has recorded seven double-doubles so far this season, and has been a vocal leader on the court for the 'Phins.
Roberts tallied 19 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal in 33 minutes played in her first career start during the season opener against Lake Erie. She poured in 25 points, on 10-13 shooting from the field and 5-6 from the line, and eight rebounds during a home win over Saint Rose.
Roberts pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds at Adelphi on November 22, then recorded a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double during Le Moyne's second meeting against the Panthers on February 1.
The Dolphins, currently ranked third in the East Region Poll, will wait to see where they land in the NCAA Championships.
