MSOC: #1 DOLPHINS TIE DOWLING, 1-1, BEHIND SPADINE'S GOAL

Box Score

Brookhaven, N.Y. – Freshman Michael Spadine (Owego, N.Y./Owego) scored just over four minutes into the game to lead the top-ranked Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie with Dowling on Saturday afternoon at Golden Lions Field.

After taking the ball down the field, Spadine scored at the 4:08 mark with a shot under the Dowling goalkeeper. The Golden Lions responded with three shots in a span of 65 seconds, but graduate student goalkeeper Dan St. Jacques (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) saved two and the other was blocked by a Le Moyne defender.

Dowling, which knocked off 14th-ranked Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, was awarded a penalty kick with 24:23 remaining in the opening half when junior midfielder Marcus Debottis (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was whistled for a hand ball in the penalty box and issued a red card. However, forward Gerassimos Magoulas missed the penalty kick to keep the Dolphins in the lead. The Golden Lions had another chance to tie the score before halftime, but Alargie Jobe's header was saved by St. Jacques.

Just under 13 minutes into the second half, Dowling evened the score at a goal apiece. John Ortega crossed the ball from the right side to Sean Dougherty, who headed the ball past freshman goalkeeper Matthew Silva">Matthew Silva (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine) and into the left corner of the goal.

Over the final 30 minutes of regulation, Dowling was able to get off six shots, two of which needed to be saved by Silva, while Le Moyne registered three shots, only one of which was on target.

In the first overtime period, Dowling's Harald Gundhus attempted the only two shots, the first of which was saved by Silva, with the second going wide. Magoulas had the only shot in the second overtime period, but it was blocked by the Le Moyne defense.

Silva registered four saves in 65 minutes of action after halftime, while St. Jacques turned away four shots in the opening 45 minutes. Dowling's Chris Kucera only made one save on the afternoon. The Golden Lions out-shot the Dolphins, 16-6, including an 11-3 edge after halftime, while each team recorded five corner kicks.

Le Moyne (1-1-1), which has gone to overtime with the Golden Lions in its last two match-ups (2-1 victory in 2009), opens Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. against American International.
