Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Kelly Ristoff (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Siena) scored with 39 seconds left in the second overtime period to give the Le Moyne College women's soccer team a 3-2 win over Bentley University on Saturday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at Ted Grant Field.
Le Moyne opened the game's scoring just over nine minutes into the contest. Junior midfielder Lindsey Bakal (Newark Valley, N.Y./Newark Valley) sent a pass from the left side of the field to freshman forward Rachel Terry (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), who took a dribble towards the center of the field and fired a 23 yard shot over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net for the fifth time in three games at the 9:15 mark.
The Falcons answered back with two goals in a span of 11 and one-half minutes to take the lead. They got on the scoreboard as Ana Tantum carried the ball down the right side of the field, cut into the penalty box and then pushed a shot into the lower left corner of the goal from eight yards out at the 11:29 mark. With just over 22 minutes left in the half, Jamie Grinavic fired a shot off the right post, collected the rebound and then knocked the ball into the back of the goal for the first time this season.
Following 63 minutes of scoreless action, during which time the Dolphins recorded all four of the span's shots, the Dolphins were awarded a penalty kick when Ristoff was fouled in the penalty box with 3:50 remaining in regulation. Terry stepped up and buried the kick inside the left post to knot the game at two apiece.
After 19 minutes of overtime action, Ristoff received the ball off a throw-in, dribbled down the endline and slipped a shot in between the goalkeeper and the near right post for her first goal as a Dolphin.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Werthmann">Kayla Werthmann (Macomb, Mich./Chippewa Valley) picked up her first career victory after holding the Falcons scoreless after halftime. Nicole Derba suffered the loss for the Falcons after yielding two goals, while making five saves, after taking over between the pipes at halftime. The Dolphins registered a 12-6 advantage in shots, including a 10-0 mark after halftime, while taking all six of the game's corner kicks.
Le Moyne (3-1, 1-0 NE-10), which recorded an overtime win of the first time in 10 opportunities after going 0-4-5 (including 0-3-5 last year) over its last nine overtime contests, returns to action on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. against The College of Saint Rose. The game marks the first contest in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions. Saint Rose captured the 2011-12 "Upstate Challenge", while Le Moyne was victorious during the 2012-13 campaign.
