Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – Triston Sommerville scored in the 79th minute to lead Bloomfield to a 2-1 upset victory of the fourth-ranked Le Moyne College men's soccer team on Monday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
The Deacons, who upset 15th-ranked Wilmington on Thursday, got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the sixth minute. Juan Ramirez fed the ball up the middle of the field, where Dwayne Reid avoided an offsides trap. Going in one-on-one with freshman goalkeeper Matthew Silva (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine), Reid slid the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the year.
The Dolphins, who had their 25-game home unbeaten streak snapped with the loss, evened the score at one apiece at the 35:26 mark. Following a foul by Bloomfield in the penalty box, senior midfielder Zach Kuzemka">Zach Kuzemka (Chenango Forks, N.Y./Chenango Forks/Fairfield) buried the penalty kick into the lower right corner of the goal.
After 43 and one-half minutes of scoreless action, Bloomfield took the lead on Sommerville's first goal of the season. Bloomfield goalkeeper Steven Alonso started the play by breaking up a one-on-one scoring chance by Kuzemka in front of the goal. After a Bloomfield defender cleared the ball up field, Sommerville collected the loose ball on the right side of the penalty box and scored with a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
Silva, making his collegiate debut for the Dolphins, registered four saves in taking the loss. Alonso improved to 3-0 on the season by turning away four shots.
Le Moyne (1-1), which last lost at home on October 28, 2007 to Merrimack in the Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinals, returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Dowling at 1:00 p.m. The Dolphins last lost in the regular season at home on September 8, 2007 against Merrimack, a span of 24 games.
