The 1979 baseball team went 51-8 over the Fall and Spring seasons and finished in third place at the NCAA Championships. The team featured eight members who earned election into the Gold Wave Hall of Fame and 10 who went on to play professionally. The Dolphins went 20-3 during the Fall season, the best in the program's history, including a pair of eight-game winning streaks as the team won 16 of its last 17 games. During the Spring, the Dolphins went 31-5, including 25-2 in the regular season. The team won its last 15 regular season games and extended the streak to 17 by winning the first two games of the Mid-Atlantic Regional at MacArthur Stadium, home of the Syracuse Chiefs. The Dolphins captured their second straight Mid-Atlantic title by defeating California (Pa.) in the winner-take-all championship game. The Dolphins then went on to record victories over Minnesota State-Mankato, Jacksonville State and New Haven in the NCAA Championships in Springfield, Illinois. Thomas Fletcher, Michael Mariano and Carmen Vecchio earned all-America honors and were joined by Steve Helmer, Dave McKie and Dave Thomson in collecting all-region and all-conference honors.
