A 38-year employee, Doc devoted his life to serving Le Moyne College, the athletic department and most importantly, its student-athletes. He started as the College's first athletic trainer in 1977, a position he held for nine years. After serving three years as the Recreation Center's building supervisor, he became the College's first Athletic Equipment Manager, as well as transportation coordinator and volunteer strength coach. He stepped down from his full-time role as equipment manager in December 2008 and continued on in a part-time role into January 2015.

In February 1996, Joiner was presented the Gold Wave Dolphin Award in recognition of outstanding commitment, loyalty and dedication to Le Moyne College and its student-athletes. In September 2011, previous Dolphin Award recipients were formally welcomed into the Gold Wave Hall of Fame on the merit of their service to Le Moyne College.

In October 1999, Joiner was presented the Bene Merenti Medal at Le Moyne's fall Convocation in appreciation for 20 years of service to the College.

In September 2009, the equipment room was dedicated in Joiner's honor as "Doc's Place" and at the Gold Wave Hall of Fame ceremony in September 2010, it was proclaimed that the annual homecoming weekend would be known from then on as John 'Doc' Joiner Homecoming Weekend.

John "Doc" Joiner was recognized as the Rev. Vincent B. Ryan, S.J. Dolphin Award Winner in 1996 and is officially inducted into the
