Garrett J. DeYulia ’66 – Class of 1987
Diligence…
The word is defined as steady, earnest and energetic effort. The application of one’s entirety toward goals. The knowledge that luck is a pleasant surprise bestowed on those who refuse to expect it.
Gary DeYulia came to Le Moyne after a stellar academic and athletic career at St. Patrick’s High School in Syracuse and played on some of the finest Basketball teams ever assembled on the Heights. The Dolphins appeared in NCAA post-season competition in each of his three years of varsity play, compiling an outstanding 49-19 record.
A great natural shooter, his determination is shown by the steady improvement of his scoring, from 16 points per game as a sophomore, to 17.4 as a junior, to 20.2 in his final season. Yet his own statistics were not Gary DeYulia’s goal. His efforts defined what it takes to be a winner: He never forced a shot, he played both ends of the court, and his diligence required his teammates to expect more of themselves.
But personal athletic honors came: All-Middle-Eastern Athletic Conference, All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, First Team Catholic College All-American, and Honorable Mention College All-American. Other facets of this man show in other honors: Dean’s List, Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit Honor Society and Pi Gamma Mu. He also had an opportunity to pitch in post-season baseball at Yankee Stadium.
Post-graduate study at Fordham University and a stint in the U.S. Air Force National Guard followed Le Moyne’s 1966 commencement. In 1968 Gary entered the U.S. Secret Service as a special agent. The attribute of diligence is key to those entrusted with the protection of our public officials. With the same single-minded determination that helped him to hold opposing basketball players in check, Gary DeYulia has seen to the safety of America’s leaders.
He served with the Vice Presidential Protective Division, the Intelligence Division, the Presidential Protective Division and he now shares his expertise as the agent in charge of the James J. Rowley Training Center in Beltsville, Maryland.
The demands of a challenging career have not diminished the other facets of Gary DeYuia’s life. He shares his athletic talent with his community as a volunteer youth-league coach and as an active participant in the Fairfax County Police Recreation Association.
Gary and his wife, the former Joyce Luthi, are proud of their son Garrett and daughter Danielle. Theirs is a family built on a solid foundation: The understanding that steady, earnest and energetic effort, the application of one’s entirety toward a goal, is the road to success in any endeavor.
Because he teaches us the importance of diligence,
Garrett J DeYulia should be a member of the
