The 1989 Baseball season was tabbed as a “Year to Remember.” The season featured a group of talented and gutsy players, who for a short few months, shined a strong light on College viewed by those across the country.
After capturing the ECAC Championship, the ’89 Dolphins earned the 6th seed in the NCAA Regional that featured some of college baseball’s finest programs. In just a few days, these Dolphins made their mark. They first upset top-seeded Arkansas on the first day. Following a loss to Illinois on the second day, Le Moyne took on Penn in an elimination game. The game began with a rocky start as Penn jumped out to a 13-0 lead. A rainstorm pushed the conclusion of the game to the following day. What happened the next day was chronicled across the country in the New York Times, Washington Post and San Francisco Examiner. Down 14-0, the Dolphins completed the greatest comeback in an NCAA tournament game, capped by Chris Zimmerman’s three-run home run to top Penn, 18-16.
Later that night, Matt Stevens and Randy Marshall pitched and hit the Dolphins past the daunting Arizona State Sun Devils by the score of 4-2, capping what Tom Cooney called the greatest day he ever had in sports. The miracle run ended the next day with a 6-5 loss to Arkansas....just one game shy of reaching the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
For this group, success did not end on the baseball field. Many have taken leadership roles in the community, began successful business ventures and supporting the College, all while staying true to their Jesuit education.
Tonight, we are honored to welcome the 1989 Le Moyne College Baseball team into the Athletics Hall of Fame.
