The most successful team in the program's history, the 2009 Men's Soccer team went 18-3-3 and won its first NCAA East Region Championship to earn a berth in the NCAA Championship semifinals in Tampa, Florida. The 18 victories are the most in a season in the program's history. For his efforts, head coach Tom Bonus was named the NSCAA/MONDO East Region Coach of the Year. The Dolphins went 10-2-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action, including 6-0 at home, to earn the second seed in the NE10 Championship. After a 3-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire in the fifth game of the season, the Dolphins posted a 15-1-2 record over the next 18 games. They posted unbeaten streaks of eight games and nine games around a loss over the time-span. Over a stretch of six games from September 23 until October 10, the Dolphins did not allow a goal for 467 minutes and 56 seconds. In the NE10 Championship, the Dolphins recorded home one-goal victories over the seventh, third and fourth seeds to capture their second conference championship in five seasons. As the top seed in the NCAA Championships East Regional, they opened pursuit of a national championship with a 1-0 victory over Franklin Pierce in the regional semifinals for the program's second-ever NCAA win after receiving a bye in the first round. The following week, the Dolphins played to a 1-1 tie with Southern New Hampshire and then defeated the Penmen in a shootout, 3-2, to advance to the NCAA Championship semifinals. The team fell in the semifinals to eventual nation champion, Fort Lewis College. The Dolphins had two players earn NE10 First Team honors, one on the Second Team and one on the Third Team. The team also had three players selected to the NSCAA All-East Region First Team and one named to the Second Team. Junior forward Angelo Reina was named to the NSCAA All-America First Team, becoming the second player in the program's history to earn First Team All-America honors, and junior back Sean Lawlor became just the second Dolphin to ever be tabbed to the NSCAA All-America Second Team. Reina led the team offensively with a conference-leading 46 points on a conference-best 20 goals and six assists. Reina became just the 10th player in the conference's history to score at least 20 goals in a season and the 13th to eclipse 45 points. Statistically, the Dolphins led the Northeast-10 Conference in points (118) and goals (44), second in points per game (4.92) and assists (30) and tied for third in shutouts. Goalkeeper Steve White finished the year ranked second in the NE10 in goals against average at 0.76 and shutouts with eight.
