Anne Scheftic Stevens ’92 – Class of 2003

A family affair…

Winter in Winooski has often posed a challenge for Le Moyne athletes.  Perhaps seeking sympathy, after an especially forgettable road game against St. Michael’s a young woman lamented to her family that she had played poorly.  There was no sympathy to be found: “You’re right,” her grandmother replied.  “You were terrible.”

Candor can be a sign of love.  And in the case it was.  Acknowledging a poor performance can lead to better ones.  And in this case it led to many.

Anne Scheftic was a force in Le Moyne athletics throughout her collegiate career.  She ran cross country, dominated on the mound in softball and was one of the most versatile basketball stars the college has produced.

Anne played all five positions on the basketball court.  Her ability to excel at each is indicated by the prominence of her name in an array of career statistics: first all-time in free throws made; third in points (1,539), points-per-game (14.7) and field goals (552).  In the top ten in free throw percentage (71.3%), rebounds (645), assists (262) and steals (205).

Anne was captain of the basketball team in her senior year and an all-conference selection in both softball and basketball. In 1993 she earned the John J. O’Brien Award as Senior Athlete of the Year.

Anne cut her athletic teeth at Le Moyne, attending camps and clinics as a youth.  She worked hard at everything she tackled.  Coach Tom Cooney says her interview took place while she was in overalls and covered with grease, working at her father’s business.

Cooney recalls her as quiet and unassuming.  “You wouldn’t know she was on the court- until it counted,” he says.  But he retooled his offence to take full advantage of her skills.  He had her learn to play every position so he could create the best possible mismatch in a variety of situations. That her grandmother was in Winooski to observe that forgettable performance is no surprise.  Her athletic career in Green and Gold was observed closely – at home and on the road – by generations of relatives. Cheering often, encouraging all the time, occasionally candid when the situation called for it, the “Scheftic Band” was a fixture on Le Moyne sidelines.Anne Scheftic Stevens was a brilliant, multi-talented collegiate athlete.  She is a young woman whose character and spirit reflects honor on her alma mater.  A person whose collegiate athletic career was truly a family affair and thus exemplifies one of the key elements of the Le Moyne Athletic Tradition and therefore,
Anne Scheftic Stevens ’92, is a member of the
Le Moyne College Athletic Hall of Fame.
