Brian C. Horey ’69 – Class of 1998
Higher, faster, farther…
There is no ambiguity in victory or defeat for those who compete in the realm of higher, faster and farther. The clock and tape measure leave nothing to discretion.
Tactics and strategy play a role in track and field. But in the end, events are won through individual strength, endurance and, most importantly, determination. These characteristics distinguished a young man from Fredonia who arrived on the Heights in 1965 and left his mark as one of the most versatile athletes ever to wear green and gold.
He combined the endurance and stamina of a first-class distance runner with the explosive strength of a champion high-jumper. His individual first-place finishes led Le Moyne teams to two Middle Eastern Athletic Association Cross-Country Championships. He won the two-mile outdoor run at the New York State Collegiate Track and Field Championships. He set meet records in winning both the indoor and outdoor State Collegiate high jump championships.
In his senior year he routinely performed in the high jump while running in the mile and two-mile events, winning all of these competitions in three meets. It was not uncommon for him to throw the javelin and triple-jump as well.
An athlete who accepts higher, faster and farther as an absolute criteria for success will have the determination required for stunning achievements. In 1969 he closed 60 yards in less than two laps to steal the two-mile run at the Union College Invitational. In a performance that ranks as one of the greatest individual feats in Le Moyne athletic history, he once anchored a Le Moyne two-mile relay victory; sprinted to the infield to qualify at 6’1’’; and, with only a few minutes of rest, went on to win the high jump competition.
He was selected as Le Moyne’s Athlete of the Year in 1968 and in 1969 he received the prestigious Medallion for Academic Achievement and Athletic Prowess from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The commitment to excellence and self-discipline manifest at Le Moyne has led him to build a strong family; a successful career; and to accept leadership responsibility in an array of community activities.
He established a mark for versatility and a commitment to absolute success over a four-year career that stands as a challenge to Dolphin athletes. And therefore, Brian C. Horey ’69 is inducted to the Le Moyne College Athletic Hall of Fame.
