Peter J. Jerebko ’88 – Class of 2004
Expecting to win…
The opponent and the score didn’t matter. He never knew a situation where he thought Le Moyne would lose. Peter Jerebko was never afraid to take the game in his own hands.
Heavily recruited after an all-state career at Depew High School, Peter started every game in his time at Le Moyne. John Beilein calls him the best all-around player he coached in his nine years on the Heights; the “glue” on four squads that averaged 19 victories a season.
With a frame that allowed him to mix it up inside, a knack of anticipating an opponent’s moves, quick reflexes and an unsurpassed long-range shooting touch, his name is prominent across the college’s “all-time” lists. He grabbed 731 rebounds, stole the ball 117 times and scored 1,736 points – including 165 three-pointers. He had an amazing 49.5 percent career average from beyond the arc and holds both first and second place in shooting percentage for a season at Le Moyne.
Coaches and teammates say his intangible contributions made him even more valuable than such gaudy statistics indicate. They speak of confidence, exceptional instincts and floor leadership. They remember him coolly sinking last-second shots to win or force overtime in key games – even though everyone in the house knew the Dolphins would be looking for him.
His legacy is best marked by Le Moyne’s record with him in green and gold: 77 wins against only 44 losses. The 1987-88 team he co-captained was among Le Moyne’s all-time best, winning the Mid-East Conference Championship and an NCAA bid with a 24-6 record.
Basketball was not his only skill. He graduated with a National Honor Society membership to complement a Mid-East Conference Player of the Year award and two Le Moyne Most Valuable Player selections.
The steady confidence and leadership that marked his career on the Heights has served him well in his professional life as a coach and college administrator and in raising a family with his wife Lisa.
He was among the best who ever launched a basketball at Le Moyne College. He was the leader of some of the all-time best Dolphin teams. He is a graduate who represents the best of the Le Moyne Athletic Tradition and therefore,
Peter J. Jerebko ’88, is indicted into the
Le Moyne College Athletic Hall of Fame.
