Jene E. Grey ’79 – Class of 1991

Gifted…

No scene in sport is more inspiring than a gifted basketball player’s fluid motion, accelerating around an opponent, at one with a ball now ricocheting off the court, now moving up across the body, and seemingly without effort, suddenly arcing toward the hoop.

Smooth and graceful, a player who seemed born to play basketball treated Dolphin fans to that scene on many a winter night.  And as the ball sailed inevitably through the hoop, the crowd would erupt with delight: Jene-O! Jene-O!

The truly gifted athlete makes his sport seem simple; the most challenging task easy.  Jene E. Grey had that sort of talent.

In his sophomore year he was an integral part of the best Dolphin squad of the 1970’s, which compiled a 15-7 record, including victories over five Division I programs.  But Jene showed his true mettle in his final two seasons on the Heights.

Called upon to play center on less talented teams, in contest after contest he was the focus of opponents’ defensive strategy, matched against taller players, double-teamed.  He responded to the challenge by averaging more than 22 points and 12 rebounds a game in his junior and senior years, leading the Dolphins to a winning record.  In four years of varsity competition, Jene amassed 1,729 points and 969 rebounds.

Because no more gifted player has worn the green and gold,

Jene E Grey ’79 is inducted into the
