James J. Deshaies ’82 – Class of 1993
Le Moyne’s Ace…
The sound reverberates through the ballpark as the pitcher toes the rubber, staring intently at his catcher. “Put it past him, Ace!” someone shouts. He seems oblivious to the ruckus; not hearing, not sensing the hands pounding in unison; the feet stamping in concert. The dreams of his teammates ride on his left arm as he brings his hands to his belt, glances ‘round the bases, kicks…
And delivers strike three.
In leading the Dolphins to four straight post-season appearances, including two trips to the College World Series, this classy left-hander recorded 279 strikeouts in 321 innings pitched, compiling 37 wins against only 11 losses and an earned run average of 2.46. Drafted by the Yankees, he quickly rose through their system and when he suited up for his first start he became the 1,000 player to don Bronx Bomber pinstripes. It was the beginning of a solid major league career, including a place in the record book that should stand the test of time; while pitching for the Astros he began a game against the Dodgers by recording eight consecutive Ks.
The fame and fortune of baseball’s big show, like the earlier accolades at Le Moyne, have failed to alter the character and substance of this young man from Massena. He has done impressive things. But his demeanor makes it clear he is not impressed by himself.
Le Moyne College can point to few graduates who have turned sport into a successful profession. But this institution seeks to develop more than a fastball, and defines worth in terms more significant than a professional contract.
Because he achieved the pinnacle of his sport, but moreover because he is possessed with the character and substance that appropriately define the criteria for the honor, James J. Deshaies ’82 is inducted to the Le Moyne College Athletic Hall of Fame.
