C. Bernard Quinn ’51 – Class of 1987
Matters of Moment…
It seems fitting to single out Bernie Quinn in the Dolphin’s fortieth year. Le Moyne’s time and his time have been in tune ever since his arrival on the Heights via James Street.
He made the most of his time at the college. He was a Dean’s list regular, the student government president in his senior year and the first manager of both the baseball and basketball teams. This combination of scholarship, leadership and hard work earned him membership in Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society.
After graduation, the Navy, in which he had served during World War II, beckoned him to Korea. Peacetime found him starting his career with Easy Washer then moving on to General Electric where he presently manages the Hourly and Non-exempt Salary Compensation program for all Syracuse operations.
An active participant in community affairs, Bernie is a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Solvay Board of Education, the advisory committee on drugs to the Syracuse common council and an assistant chief in the Solvay Volunteer fire department. He and his wife, the former Peggy Donovan, have raised four children: Mary Ann, James, Patrick-all college graduates and Theresa, a member of Le Moyne’s class of 1989.
Pythagoras said time was the soul of the world; Bernie would contend that time was the heart of a basketball game. For four decades he has taken it into his custody. The hands on the clock have been mainly his, producing an accuracy which has come to be expected and respected by officials and coaches. But it comes down to being more than “clock-wise.”
A former Dolphin captain and Hall-of-Famer, Don Savage ’51 wrote: “He always had the time and the desire to listen and give you his kind ‘words of wisdom.’ He had the nature to be helpful, patient and understanding to a group that lived and breathed athletics. He played a significant role in the early growth of athletics at Le Moyne College.”
Bernie’s way of life reminds us that “they also serve” whose uniforms have never been donned and that there is nothing secondary in being faithful for four decades. So it is with great pleasure and appreciation that we welcome C. Bernard Quinn into the Le Moyne College Athletic Hall of Fame.
