The 2005 Softball team went 43-11 and won its third NCAA Northeast Regional Championship in four years to earn a berth in the NCAA Championships in Salem, Virginia. The 43 victories were the second-most in a season in the program's history at the time. For their efforts, head coach Ken King and assistant coach Ed Mahar were named the Speedline/NFCA Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time in three years. The Dolphins went 25-3 in Northeast-10 Conference action, including 13-1 at home, to claim their third consecutive regular season championship. The Dolphins opened the season by going 5-1 at the Florida Gulf Coast University Tournament and went 9-3 in non-conference action in March. During the NE10 slate, the Dolphins put together winning streaks of 12, six and five and never dropped back-to-back games. As the host of the NCAA Northeast Regional for the second time in three years, the Dolphins battled back out of the loser's bracket to win five consecutive games, including back-to-back wins over top-seeded LIU-C.W. Post, to capture their third trip to the NCAA Championships in four seasons. Freshman pitcher Sarah Reed was named the Region Most Valuable Player after earning the win in the circle for all six of the regional victories. At the NCAA Championships, the Dolphins were edged by 53-0 Northern Kentucky University in the opening round, 2-1, and then downed by eventual runner-up Kennesaw State University on the second day. The Dolphins had four players earn NE10 First Team honors, two on the Second Team and three on the Third Team, while Reed was named the NE10 Rookie of the Year. The team also had three players selected to the NFCA All-Northeast Region First Team and three named to the Second Team. Sophomore centerfielder Lindsay Spaziani was named to the NFCA All-America Third Team, becoming the first (and still only) outfielder in the program's history to earn All-America honors. Statistically, the Dolphins led the Northeast-10 Conference in runs scored and home runs for the third straight year. On the national scene, the Dolphins ranked 10th in winning percentage at 0.796 and 23rd in earned run average at 1.46. Individually, Reed led the nation in saves with six and was 24th in earned run average at 1.10. Junior Jennifer Winters led the NE10 in runs scored (for the second straight year) with 43 and senior Kim Kalec recorded 15 doubles to lead the conference.
